Steve Jackson – What’s The Point

Wednesday, November 9th, 2011

Ex- Rockschools’ student, Steve Jackson’s Story

I do so enjoy hearing from ex-Rockschools’ students about how their lives have moved on since their Rockschools days. Today is the turn of Steve Jackson who emailed me recently.

Steve was a Rockschools’ student from 1993 to 2003. He moved on to work at the University of Derby as an AV Teaching Space Support Technician. His love of Yorkshire and desire for a secure job has led him onwards into a similar role at the University of Leeds.

Musically he has been busy too with bookings coming in for him as a solo artist and for his Ceilidh band, What’s The Point

Here’s what he says about his music:

Whilst I enjoy my work I kind of feel music is the way I want to go with things …in recent years I have been pushing myself in various areas. I have some You Tube video up of me now playing at a growing folk festival in Derbyshire and so far next year I have been re-booked for Moira Furnace Folk Festival and have a provisional booking at the Folk Station festival on the Isle of Wight. The Ceilidh band has had several successful bookings and I have done quite a large amount of recording lately also both with the band and on my own.

Take a look at some of Steve’s videos

Thanks for staying in touch Steve and congratulations on your musical successes. Who knows, maybe we can persuade you to come and do a session with Rockschools?

Rockschools Bands Show Their Talent

Monday, November 7th, 2011

A busy week coming up for Rockschools bands!

D-Fault are headlining a charity concert in aid of Leukemia and Lymphoma at the Saracen’s Head Hotel in Towcester on Saturday 12th November.

Please come and show your support for the cause and the band.

If you’re under 18 and just coming to see the band, tickets are £5, and all the money goes to the charity. If you’re over 18, tickets are £10.

D-Fault will be playing all their best songs and many known covers, from 9.30 to 10.30 and there’s a chance to get a copy of their CD too.

The event’s Facebook page is at http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=171131139646115&view=wall&ref=notif&notif_t=event_wall

Behind Closed Doors are performing at Brackley’s Got Talent, also on Saturday 12th November at Magdalen College School Hall, Waynflete Avenue, Brackley, NN13 6FB. They are on from 6pm.

The event’s Facebook page is at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Brackleys-Got-Talent-2011/230138047025870

Congratulations to Behind Closed Doors and to George and Naomi Rose! Both bands have got through to the final of The Battle of the Bands at Vision Cafe, Towcester on 9th December 2011.

End-of-Term Concert

Sunday, November 6th, 2011

First Saturday back at Towcester Rockschool (Brackley started on Tuesday, our Senior Rockschool on Wednesday and our after-school Rockschools every day this last week), I still tend to refer to this period as the second half of the Autumn term for our Rockschools.

This is the time when students realise that there are only a few weeks before our end-of-term concert and, for some, only three practice sessions before their performance. After much deliberation I have decided to leave our concerts on the last two Saturdays of term rather than change to a Saturday and Sunday. Many reasons but I feel this is the best.

Looking around at our 40 plus bands on Saturday, I was really impressed with the quality and depth of music-making on show – something for the audience to look forward to at the end of term.

Full details of the concerts will be sent out in this week’s newsletter and tickets will be on sale at the tuck shop from this coming Saturday. The first concert will be held on Saturday the 26th November and the second concert on Saturday the 3rd December.
